Hang Seng China Enterprises Index / Event-Driven

The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index is a free-float capitalization-weighted index comprised of H-Shares listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and included in the Hang Seng Mainland Composite Index. The base value of this index is 2000 as of Jan 3, 2000. This index replaced the old HSCE index on Oct. 3, 2001.

Hang Seng China Enterprises Index (HSCEI INDEX)

<li>The HSCEI 2024 dividend futures have moved higher following mainland China banks announcing that they will pay out interim dividends starting this year.</li>
<li>The HSCEI 2025 dividend futures have moved higher too, though they have lagged the HSCEI 2024 dividend futures.</li>
<li>Even though the HSCEI 2024/25 dividend steepener has dropped by around 10 points in the last few weeks, we see further downside in the near-term.</li>

The HSCEI 2024 dividend futures have moved higher following mainland China banks announcing that they will pay out interim dividends starting this year.
The HSCEI 2025 dividend futures have moved higher too, though they have lagged the HSCEI 2024 dividend futures.
Even though the HSCEI 2024/25 dividend steepener has dropped by around 10 points in the last few weeks, we see further downside in the near-term.


HSCEI Dividend Futures: Sell the 2024/25 Steepener

<li>The open interest of the HSCEI 2024 dividend futures is less than half that of the HSCEI 2023 and HSCEI 2022 open interest at the same time of the year.</li>
<li>Market volatility and the fallout of the losses faced by Korean investors (and the scrutiny of Korean ELS-issuing banks) are among the primary reasons for the low open interest.</li>
<li>Our fair value for the HSCEI 2024 dividend futures is higher than the current market but there is a lot of sensitivity to bank dividends and special dividends.</li>

The open interest of the HSCEI 2024 dividend futures is less than half that of the HSCEI 2023 and HSCEI 2022 open interest at the same time of the year.

China Shenhua Energy Company Limited is an integrated coal-based energy company focusing on the coal and power businesses in China.  The Company also owns and operates an integrated coal transportation network consisting of dedicated rail lines and port facilities.

As expected, China Shenhua Energy Co H (1088 HK) replaces Country Garden Holdings Co (2007 HK) in the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index (HSCEI INDEX) at the close 2 June.
Using prices from the close on 12 May, estimated one-way turnover is 2.1% leading to a one-way trade of HK$1.3bn (US$170m).
The change will lead to an increase in the fair value of the HSCEI 2023 Dividend Futures. We'd be sellers on a move higher towards 240 DIPS.


HSCEI Index Rebalance: China Shenhua (1088 HK) Replaces Country Garden (2007 HK); Div Impact

<li>The HSCEI 2023 dividend futures have dropped over the last week as results have trickled in and some of the larger dividend payers have cut their final dividends.</li>
<li>Over 50% of the DIPS are confirmed now and that number will increase significantly over the next couple of days as the remaining companies announce their final dividends.</li>
<li>From our estimates, just over 80% of the DIPS will be confirmed by tomorrow though over 66% of the total DIPS will have CNYHKD risk attached to it.</li>
</ul>
