Athaporn Arayasantiparb, CFA

Athaporn served as Head of Research for UOB and ANZ in Thailand and was an award-winning telecoms analyst at UBS in 2010 (AsiaMoney Thailand category) and Regional Strategist for DMG in Singapore. Prior to that, he also served as Kasikornbank credit analyst and scholar. He has a total work experience of 22 years, of which 19 were in research and 9 in research management roles. He started his career as an engineer for PTT and currently manages family investments. He holds an MBA from Stern (NYU) and CFA Charter since 2006.

<p>In this two-part series about my alma mater, Singapore-based UOB Group, we highlight some of the interesting corporate culture, such as cost controls, a large returnee population, and strangely relaxed but effective working environment. From a working standpoint, UOB, one of Singapore's three largest banks, remains a family business, but their reach spans most of Southeast Asia and even HK and parts of China. Most outsiders don't realize that UOB has selective presence in London and America too yo.</p><p>Founded by Wee Kheng Chiang, nicknamed the Uncrowned King of Sarawak by none other than one of the White Rajah's Queen!, they have since branched out into both related (securities, private equities) and unrelated (property, Tiger Balm...seriously?...and even food yo). This is a story of a Group that will occasionally follow Rupert Murdoch's haphazard strategy of "Throw Spaghetti to the wall and see what sticks", but they've achieved pretty good results with it to the best of my recollections.
