<p>The spike in Indian railway accidents has put the spotlight on Suresh Prabhu, the railway minister who was appointed in late 2014 with a mandate to transform the railways into an engine of growth for the economy. Since taking charge, considerable resources have been deployed by the Indian Railways. The rise in railway investments have done their bit in boosting overall growth and partly counteracting the collapse in private corporate sector investment.  Unfortunately, railway revenues have stagnated on account of the slowdown, and to date, the reform-oriented minister has been unable to make a meaningful beneficial impact on this mammoth public enterprise.</p>
