The FRETAI bonds have drifted slightly downwards despite the August 29th announcement on the company’s sale to Reliance industries (RIL). This is due to the uncertainty with regard to the acquisition, as well as the liquidity stress facing Future Group entities. We believe the key approval is antitrust, given that the two companies involved are the top and second-largest players in the offline retail industry. Future Retail has c. 2,000 stores, compared to RIL’s 3,700 retail outlets. That said, it would be in all parties’ interest (including the government) to conclude the transaction early, given the liquidity crunch for Future Group companies and as many jobs are at stake. We expect the transaction to take 6-9 months.
