The SPDR® Straits Times Index ETF displaced the SPDR® GOLD SHARES ETF as the most traded of Singapore ETF in 1Q21, with the local benchmark among the strongest global equity indices in 1Q21, attributed to the performance of the bank heavyweights, in addition to two constituents announcing significant strategic restructures.

The global vaccine rollout, continued global monetary policy support, the steeping of the US Yield curve, continued gains in commodity prices and increased demand for semiconductors were key drivers of global markets in 1Q21. The US two-year and 10-year Note yield curve doubled from 80 basis points to near 160 basis points in 1Q21, which propelled banks to be the best performing equity sector across the globe in 1Q21. The Federal Reserve refused to be drawn into commenting on the yield curve, and like most Central Banks remain focused on seeing out the COVID-19 crisis. The Federal Reserve Balance Sheet has now grown to US$7.7 trillion, while the European Central Bank Balance Sheet also stands at €7 trillion. This policy stimulus has supported businesses in all shapes and sizes, and by extension help to fuel the moves in stocks, global indices and commodity prices. For the overarching market driver, as of 6 April, 680 million COVID-19 vaccination doses had been administered across the globe, which is now five times the total recorded COVID-19 cases at 132 million. While Singapore Airlines expects passenger capacity to be around 26% of pre-COVID in May, international travel still remains restricted, and the UK, South Africa and South America variant strains of the virus are providing social and economic challenges. 

This longshot of this was more gains of equity markets in 1Q21, albeit more moderate gains compared to the strong gains of 4Q21 which coincided with Vaccine Developments. Given the 40% weightage of the Straits Times Index (“STI”) to banks, the STI was amongst the best performing global equity indices in 1Q21 as discussed <a href="https://www.sgx.com/research-education/market-updates/20210329-sti-currently-leading-world-benchmarks-march">here</a>. Combined turnover of the two STI tracking ETFs increased by 22% year-on-year to $625 million in 1Q21, from S$512 million in 1Q20. On a quarter-on-quarter basis, the combined turnover of the two STI tracking ETFs increased 48% from $423 million in 4Q20. This saw the SPDR® Straits Times Index ETF generate the most trading turnover of the 30 ETFs listed for trading in Singapore in 1Q21, by a significant margin of close to S$250 million. 

The ten most traded Singapore-listed ETFs in 1Q21 are tabled below. For the quarter, the Lion-OCBC Securities Hang Seng TECH ETF, Nikko AM SGD Investment Grade Corporate Bond ETF, and the Xtrackers MSCI China UCITS ETF joined the ranks of Singapore’s 10 most traded ETFs. Seven of Singapore’s most traded ETFs in 2020, continued to rank among the 10 most traded Singapore ETFs of 1Q21.

ETFs are investment funds listed and traded intraday on a stock exchange. The majority aim to track the performance of an index and provide access to a wide variety of markets and asset classes, including local stocks, international securities, bonds, commodities or money markets. Each ETF gives investors access to the performance of the asset that comprises the underlying index. Investing in the ETF is also less costly if one was to build a similar portfolio by buying the individual stocks. It also provides exposure to international markets and asset classes that may be inaccessible to individual investors.
