<ul><li>Australians went to the polls on Saturday, 2nd July.  At the time of writing on Sunday 3<sup>rd</sup>, neither of the two major political parties had secured an absolute majority in the Lower House. With 78% of the vote counted, the Liberal-National Party Coalition government had won 65 seats and the ALP had won 67, with 5 held by independents and micro-parties, and 13 seats in doubt.  Of those seats that are too close to call, the LNP is ahead in eight while the ALP is ahead in five.  If the final results cut this way, that would give the LNP 73 seats and the ALP 72.    </li><li>Of the five independents and micro-parties, Mr Bob Katter is expected to support the LNP while the Greens MP, Mr Adam Bandt has flagged that he will support the ALP.  That gives the LNP 74 seats and the ALP 73 with 3 non-aligned independents.  Two of the independents have already ruled out forming government with either major party.  From here, the final outcome could hinge on the counting of postal and absentee votes which could drag on for weeks.  After a protracted period of uncertainty, it is still possible that Australia will be stuck with a hung Parliament, with no major party in a position to form even minority government. </li><li>The economy has been mired in an income recession since global commodity prices peaked in 2011, with wages growing at a record low and core inflation falling well below the central bank’s target. The uncertainty of the election outcome will do little to dispel offshore investors’ concerns that the lion’s share of Australia’s stock market – dominated by the major banks – remains stuck on a low growth path.</li></ul>
