<p>Forecast numbers on EV (and autonomous EV/auto) ridership are all over the map. But it is also clear that EV growth and demand for raw materials for EV batteries will add some marginal growth to bulk shipping, particularly minor bulks, in the form of additional growth in nickel, copper, manganese, lithium, cobalt, bauxite and alumina, as well as other materials for batteries and auto materials. In this early stage study, we look at major drivers of materials for bulk shipping and prospects for more ship demand, as a result.</p><p>Seaborne exports from China were about 580m tonnes in 2016, compared to about 390m tonnes in 2010. And minor bulks were a main driver of growth, taking up about three fourths of China exports with a growth of about 74% between 2012 and 2014 to 258m tonnes. Steel products, of course, were a major component, with China exporting about 54m tonnes of steel products in 2012, and over 100m tonnes by 2015. In coming years, we may see rotation in that growth to other minor bulks, including new avenues of growth (despite a constant risk that steel flatlines or pulls back). Minor bulks trade in 2016 stood at about 1.97bn tonnes and total bulk trade at 5.24bn tonnes.</p><p>In looking at research and data available for this report, I was surprised at how many contradictions and false leads I generated. In some segments I found many nonsensical assumptions on future availability of materials and corresponding price points or costs. Nonetheless, a definite pattern emerges:</p><ul><li>Short term we will see little impact in volume growth to bulk shipping and shipping from growth in EVs and EV batteries;</li><li>Mid-term, the picture begins to change.
