Toyota reported ¥27.2trn in revenue, ¥2.20trn in OP and ¥2.25trn in NP for FY03/21. These figures were 1.7%, 3.8% and 13.2% above consensus. We had been expecting EPS of just under ¥780 vs. consensus at ¥700 but Toyota eventually generated ¥795. Prospects for next year remain bright.

There are signs of movement in Japan in order to try and hit its 2050 carbon neutrality goal. The clearest sign was the recent restart of an old nuclear reactor and nuclear power is likely to be a key contributor towards this goal, however, in addition to solar, onshore and offshore wind and geothermal, on a timeline that long, hydrogen may actually be the key play here.

Sona Comstar (Sona) aims to raise around US$800m in its Indian IPO. The company is backed by Blackstone, which held a 66.2% stake prior to listing.Sona is an automotive technology company, designing, manufacturing and supplying highly engineered, mission critical automotive systems and components to automotive OEMs across US, Europe, India and China, for both electrified and non-electrified powertrain segments.Sona delivered a steady performance in 2019 with revenue up 16.6% and PAT up 24.1%. However, its revenue fell by 14.5% in FY20, although it still managed to grow its PAT by 4%. In addition, its 9M21 performance was propped by a single EV customer. While the company enjoys a long customer relationship, its largest customers haven’t consistently grown their contribution to revenue over the past few years.

Our constant refrain over the last few years as EV and AD related hype built was that traditional automakers in general and Toyota in particular did not lack anything technologically to compete with “disruptors”. VW’s rapid gobbling up of Tesla’s share in Europe has demonstrated this and with Toyota now accelerating its own EV launches, we believe this will become abundantly clear within the next 18 months.
