Sony’s just concluded PS5 showcase finally revealed pricing at $500, with the digital version coming in at $400. These prices have been speculated on for some time and are not a real surprise though we did believe there was a possibility Sony would have tried to undercut Microsoft slightly. There were some small surprises in terms of exclusivity and the new PlayStation Plus Collection, however, and we discuss these below.

A Nikkei report from 18 August announced that Third Point had sold most of its position in Sony in the second quarter. That caused a little bit of consternation in the market with the share price shedding 500 yen, or 5%. That may not sound a lot, but it is equivalent to wiping out Sony’s entire movie division. Sony (and Third Point for that matter) should have gotten a more apologetic mea culpa than the follow up article a week later, explaining that the activist had only sold a few ADRs...Oops.     Nevertheless, the gut reaction from the stock market suggests that investors share Third Point’s desire to see “A stronger Sony.”  Given that the share price of Sony has surged about 80% since April last year and is approaching the fund’s original target price, investors should be watchful for signs that the activist is heading for the exit.
