LIHL's FY 2020 results were weak, as we had expected the COVID-19 pandemic to severely impact the company. Sales are likely to remain soft in FY 2021, as the Hong Kong economy should remain affected by the pandemic. Moreover, it should take time for visitor arrivals to pick up, even after the re-opening of borders. That said, LIHL's retail operations have historically weathered industry downturns better than the average retailer. Our concerns about the company mainly involve: [1] its vulnerability to external shocks, given the nature of its business; [2] the uncertain financial performance, caused by the company's growing financial investments; [3] LIHL's aggressive investment appetite, even in challenging operating environments; [4] the slow progress of the Kai Tak project; and [5] the company's commitment to transparency.
