<p>The Japan Exchange Group (JPX) publishes a daily report that details the short sell activity by market participants. Investors are required to submit their short sale position to the brokers when their short positions exceed 0.20% of the outstanding shares. The brokers then pass the short position reports to the exchange. <p>I have been lax in covering the <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/chiyoda-corp" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:6232:1" rel="noopener">Chiyoda Corp (6366 JP)</a> situation because <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/profiles/mio-kato-cfa" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="accounts:713" rel="noopener">Mio Kato, CFA</a> has been <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/chiyoda-corp/insights" target="_blank" rel="noopener">covering</a> the stock and its situation for months (and years) quite ably. For background on the company, I urge you to read his <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/chiyoda-corp/insights" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pieces</a>.</p><p>There is one angle, however, which <em>I</em> should have covered. That is the one regarding the effects of its losses on its balance sheet, and the fact that it finished the year with negative equity. </p><p>That means something. It probably means displacement of <em>20% Of The Shareholder Register.</em></p><p>It was seen with <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/sharp-corp" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:391:1" rel="noopener">Sharp Corp (6753 JP)</a> in 2016, then <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/toshiba-corp" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:637:1" rel="noopener">Toshiba Corp (6502 JP)</a> in 2017. It was a quasi-inevitability in this case.</p><p>Normally, the news would be out already because their Annual Securities Report (<em>yukashoken hokokusho</em> (有価証券報告書)) would be out the day of the Annual Shareholder Meeting, which took place on June 25th. However, on the 25th the company <a href="https://www.chiyodacorp.com/%E6%9C%89%E4%BE%A1%E8%A8%BC%E5%88%B8%E5%A0%B1%E5%91%8A%E6%9B%B8%E3%81%AE%E6%8F%90%E5%87%BA%E4%BA%88%E5%AE%9A%E6%97%A5%E3%81%AB%E9%96%A2%E3%81%97%E3%81%A6_20190625.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> (Japanese only) that they would delay the submission of their Annual Securities Report (yuho) until June 28th because of the announcement of a lawsuit filed by a former employee overseas (lawsuit was filed 11 June). </p><p>The delayed filing should come out tomorrow.</p><p>And that's when the <em>official</em> fireworks begin - when the TSE gets involved.</p>

</div><p><strong>RESILIENCE</strong> - Japanese equities have risen by 2.9% since the low of 4th June. In US dollar terms, the gain is 3.7%. Over the last two weeks, the gains are 0.7% and 1.6%, respectively. For the previous twelve months, the equity market has moved in almost perfect 'sync' with the US dollar/Japanese Yen exchange rate. This month's divergence is unusual, and it remains to be seen when, how, and if the gap will be closed. The cross rate is within ¥2.6 of the high points of the last two years. The strength of the Yen has cut that decline to -3.2% for the minority of foreign investors that are unhedged. The Bank of Japan has purchased ETFs on ten days in the new era including on each of the last three trading sessions - the largest such intervention this calendar year.  Having reached a new five-month low, a decisive low above that of December 25th is required. The market took only two trading days to descend from the current level to that 2018 low, and a fall of 6.7% from Friday's close would breach that level. <strong>SOUTHBOUND </strong>- The upside we anticipated two weeks ago turned out to be only ¥6t before the harsh realities of some weak macro data intervened and sent the market 3% lower over the last two trading days suggesting the bear market rally is now over.
