<p>On average, </p>
<p>The first sector is <strong>Consumer</strong>, where H/A spreads widened on average 2.7% for the week, more than cancelling out the average 1.7% spread narrowing last week. With the exception of <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/hisense-home-appliances-group-co-ltd-h" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:20107:1" rel="noopener">Hisense Home Appliances Group Co., Ltd. H (921 HK)</a>, this happened as the H-shares rose strongly and the A-Shares rose even more strongly.  </p>
<p>Southbound investors through the Shenzhen-HK and Shanghai-HK Connect were significant net sellers during the week in both <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/tsingtao-brewery-co-ltd-h" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:1296:1" rel="noopener">Tsingtao Brewery Co Ltd H (168 HK)</a> and <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/hisense-home-appliances-group-co-ltd-h" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:20107:1" rel="noopener">Hisense Home Appliances Group Co., Ltd. H (921 HK)</a> where the net selling activity amounted to 15.5% and 22% of volume respectively. </p>
<p>Hisense remains at the overbought end of the 52-week range. <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/great-wall-motor-co-ltd-cb302af9-398c-4d2d-ba39-023e43287eef" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:128:1" rel="noopener">Great Wall Motor (2333 HK)</a> and <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/guangzhou-automobile-group-co-ltd" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:11082:1" rel="noopener">Guangzhou Automobile Group (2238 HK)</a> are now at 52-week wides. </p>

<p>Last week's recommendation was to take off Hisense and the H-share fell 7.3% while the spread widened 0.7%. It is still probably worth unwinding. At this point, Great Wall and Guangzhou are worth a buy on a spread basis.</p>

We provide research and consultancy on Asian banks. Our focus is on what we call “Asian bank research, without the noise.” We are interested in the most critical swing-factors for banks, the NPL and credit cycle, and where we believe there is a gap between perception and reality. We often focus on the less studied components of bank financial statements.  Our research is highly thematic, sometimes examining unlisted banks and companies as a window on mainstream banks. 

Being independent allows us to look at smaller banks, often overlooked by others. Analysis of BIS bank guidelines in the context of Asia, is also a focal point, while we also analyze global banks operating in the region. We use what we believe is the most comprehensive, reliable financials database, SNL Financial. S&P Capital IQ augments our database, with corporate data and CEIC, with economics.

Thematic (Sector/Industry)

<p>There is little evidence of any major economic shutdown in China during early this year. There is also little evidence of the period when China re-opened its economy only to find most all other economies were closed. It was arguably an especially difficult period for China and its banks. Where many banks have now reported their results, it becomes clearer that the numbers hardly reflect crisis - temporary or otherwise. This though is not what really matters; rather it is the implication for profit delta during 2H20.</p>

<p>The Hang Seng Stock Connect China AH Premium Index (HSAHP) measures the absolute price premium or discount of A-shares over H-shares for the largest and most liquid mainland China companies with both A-share and H-share listings.</p><p>The HSAHP Index has fluctuated a lot over the last 10 years, reaching a high of 149.03 (A-shares trading at a 49% premium to H-shares) in July 2015 and a low of 88.97 (A-shares trading at a discount of 11% to H-shares) in July 2014.</p><p>With retail investors rushing in to equities in China and pushing stocks higher in the mainland versus their Hong Kong line, a correction in markets could see the AH premium revert by around 10% as investors head for the exit. Insurance stocks and brokerages are trading at high AH premiums and near the top of the 5 year range.</p><p>In this Insight, we look at how the HSAHP index has moved over time and identify trading opportunities where the premium is trading near the high and low end of its historical ranges.</p>

The largest four banks are the only major exceptions due to significant low-cost deposits and expansive sticky customer base. From the commentary that we have heard on China banks’ 1H18 earnings, we do not believe the focus is on the underlying reality.  There are negative implications where earnings quality is worsening considerably, while at the same time, it is likely that 2H18 is fundamentally worse, thereby making putting further pressure on core income and profit growth.</p>
