In India, ‘strong’ governments have been equally guilty of policy missteps as ‘weak’ governments. Strength has proven to be no defence against ill-advised policy decisions. India's demonetisation is a glaring example. Trust in India's policy priorities (not to mention trust in official data and the banking system) – most clearly demonstrated in the demonetisation decision – have earlier forced us to reassess what was our favourable view on India. Maybe in a new policy environment following May’s General Election will we be able to reassess positively but that will not be a short-term outcome.
