BOC Aviation (BOCA) plans to raise US$2-3bn in its Hong Kong listing, with a rumored launch in late 2Q. The listing is planned to be a mix of primary and secondary shares, with Bank of China (BOC) not intending to list more than 40% of BOCA. This will be one of the largest, if not the largest, IPOs this year in Hong Kong. BOCA is not the only aviation leasing firm wanting to list, CDB Financial leasing, which we looked at earlier, has already filed its application proof as well.  In this insight we take a look at some of the factors that could impact the deal. We've dug through Bank of China and BOCA's annual reports in order to get a better picture of the performance of BOCA over a longer duration. While growth might be slowing down, partially due to the large base, it still seems to be a clean and investable name. Should the listing go ahead, it will be a welcome change from the recent run of mediocre listing in HK.Although, long term holders should reaffirm BOC's inclination to maintain a controlling stake, as any change will have a large impact on its credit rating and hence, its funding costs. One needs to also obtain more clarity on recent and any future ABS transactions.

We're awash in concerns over inflation - the Economist last week, and multiple speakers at the 2nd Independent Research Conference where we moderated a panel on asset allocation. Ignore them.  Our analysis suggests a low near term probability of sustained inflationary concerns in core markets. However, if you disagree, steer clear of linkers and commodity futures as your inflation hedge. You'll likely lose money. We recommend equities for this role, which are currently pricing in cyclical inflation lows.  In EM, we see the trend moving in the opposite direction, as inflationary pressures top out on the back of recovery in real exchange rates.  Longer term, the outlook for inflation in core economies will move up as policy makers are forced to ease more aggressively to drive it into a 2-4% range.  Not necessarily a bad thing for risk assets.
