<p>A call with Indonesia's largest handset manufacturer <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/erajaya-swasembada-tbk-pt" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:18869:1" rel="noopener">Erajaya Swasembada (ERAA IJ),</a> revealed a relatively resilient message about the "normalisation" of sales volumes since end of 2Q2020. The outlook is not that certain but the company looks well-equipped to benefit from a recovery. </p>
<p>A key positive highlighted by management was confirmation of the implementation and enforcement of mandatory IMEI number registration from 16th September. This should go some way to killing off the rampant black market in Indonesia to the benefit of <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/erajaya-swasembada-tbk-pt" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:18869:1" rel="noopener">Erajaya Swasembada (ERAA IJ)</a>.  </p>
<p>At the peak of PSBB measures, the company had to close around 300 out of its 1,100 odd stores, which had some impact on volumes in 2Q2020 but volumes were back to pre-COVID levels in June and July.</p>
<p>Given the closure of a number of stores, <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/erajaya-swasembada-tbk-pt" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:18869:1" rel="noopener">Erajaya Swasembada (ERAA IJ)</a> has been pushing hard into other channels, such as its own online sales through <a href="http://www.eraspace.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">www.eraspace.com</a> but also through official stores on e-commerce sites such as <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/tokopedia-pt" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:24239:1" rel="noopener">Tokopedia PT (1087142D IJ),</a> <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/lazada-group" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:26148:1" rel="noopener">Lazada Group (LAZADA SP)</a>, and Shopee (<a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/sea-ltd" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:8509:1" rel="noopener">Sea Ltd (SE US)</a> but it deals with all e-commerce players. This has yielded very positive results with sales growing significantly through these channels. </p>
<p>The overall market continues to be dominated by Chinese brands, with VIVO at number one followed by OPPO, Samsung, Xiaomi, and Realme. Working and learning from home has also boosted sales of tablets. ASPs have also risen slightly in 2Q2020, which suggests some upgrading. </p>

<p>The company benefits from its ties in MT with Alfamart and Indomart as it has higher hygiene perception and less chance of contact with another person which is appreciated during COVID-19. <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/industri-jamu-dan-farmasi-sido-muncul-tbk-pt" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:6033:1" rel="noopener">Sido Muncul (SIDO IJ)</a> Q2 2020 had a nice surprise where consumers switched from Tolak Angin to other products such as Vitamin C 1000 powder drink and Ginger-flavor beverages.</p><p>Bintang Toedjoe's clinical trial on red ginger may have a negative impact in the short term but it presents a long term opportunity in the long run that Tolak Angin and other SIDO's products have an improved global acceptance, therefore, easier to sell in other countries. </p><p>Post a share price increase from IDR 500 to 1400 in the past three years, the management feels that a 1 to 2 stock split is appropriate and it will happen sometime this month. This will create more liquidity and a share price that is affordable for retail investors (around IDR 700) thus <strong>a new entry point</strong> for investors who think they missed out on SIDO as the share price was deemed too expensive.</p>
