Daily Brief South Korea: EcoPro Materials, APR and more

By | Daily Briefs, South Korea

In today’s briefing:

  • Spotting Position Patterns: TIGER Battery ETF January Review & KODEX ETF’s March Rebalancing
  • Why Is APR IPO Getting Delayed?

Spotting Position Patterns: TIGER Battery ETF January Review & KODEX ETF’s March Rebalancing

By Sanghyun Park

  • TIGER ETF (305540) rebalanced on January 11th, with Ecopro Materials correcting by 4%, contrasting a 20% surge from Jan 8-10. TIGER recorded net purchases aligning with a 2% inclusion weight.
  • Preemptive positions by local hedge funds were observed from Jan 8-10, closing on the 11th. Despite a KOSPI decline and minimal sector movement, Ecopro Materials exhibited this unusual price pattern.
  • Observing this pattern implies a potential recurrence during the March rebalancing of KODEX ETF. Notably, local hedge funds may initiate similar preemptive positions. We should consider this in position setup.

Why Is APR IPO Getting Delayed?

By Douglas Kim

  • APR announced it will delay its IPO. Now, APR’s book building has been postponed to 2 to 8 February. The IPO price range remains the same.
  • The company has provided updated preliminary sales and operating profits for 2023 in the revised IPO prospectus. Revenue was a bit light but OP was better than expected in 4Q23.
  • Our base case valuation of APR is 370,809 won per share which represents an 85% upside from the high end of the bankers’ valuation range (200,000 won).

Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust (BREIT ) – Wednesday, Oct 18, 2023

By Value Investors Club

Key points (machine generated)

  • The implied cap rate of less than 4% for “cats and dogs” in the real estate market seems unusually low, given the risks and uncertainties involved.
  • Redeeming from BREIT and utilizing their liquidity provisions would allow investors to sell at prices higher than the year-end 2021 valuation, suggesting a potential opportunity for profit.
  • Taking advantage of this opportunity could be a wise move considering the potential risks associated with the real estate market.

This article is sourced from an online content aggregator through publicly available sources and is displayed below for general informational purposes only. This article was originally published 3 months ago on Value Investors Club.

Amer Sports IPO Preview

By Douglas Kim

  • The biggest risk for Amer Sports is its excessive leverage. It had net debt of $5.9 billion and equity of only $8.8 million at the end of 3Q 2023.
  • Many investors are likely to emphasize the negatives more (especially the excessive leverage and inconsistent operating margins), rather than the positives such as China representing increasing percentage of total sales.
  • Amer Sports is trying to raise nearly $1 billion in this IPO which could value the company at about $10 billion.

[Earnings Preview] Intl. & Offshoring Markets to Drive Stunning Earnings for Schlumberger in Q423

By Suhas Reddy

  • Growth is expected to be fueled by robust performance in international markets. Management expects revenue growth for 2023 to cross 15% YoY.
  • Pretax operating margins in Q42023 to get a boost from higher year-end digital sales and seasonal product and equipment sales.
  • The analyst consensus on the stock’s growth is overwhelmingly bullish given the expectation of strong growth in international and offshore segments.

Crypto Moves #11 – One Week Into the ETFs

By Mads Eberhardt

  • The cryptocurrency industry is still buzzing with excitement after the recent approval of 11 Bitcoin spot ETFs last week.
  • As these ETFs have been trading for a week now, their current performance and net inflows are now available for our consumption.
  • This analysis will focus more on visual charts and less on text, a departure from my usual style, as the market seems to have had its fill of lengthy discussions on ETFs, which now feels akin to listening to a repetitive story from a friend or, even more tiresome, your mother-in-law.

Bud APAC (1876 HK): Nursing a Hangover; Now Comes a Passive Overhang

By Brian Freitas

IRC (1029 HK)’s MBO’s MGO: Still An Avoid

By David Blennerhassett

  • Back on the 1st November, Nikolai Levitskii, Russian iron-ore play IRC (1029 HK)‘s chairman and largest shareholder, acquired 4.72% of shares out, lifting his stake above 30%, triggering an MGO.
  • The Offer is conditional on Levitskii holding more than 50% of shares out. His intention is to maintain IRC’s listing. At the first close, he held 35.77% (5.16% had tendered).
  • The current spread is 9.2%. MIC, with 16.67% of shares out, has yet to tender. Nor do I expect them to. Plus IRC is on the OFAC sanction list. Avoid.

Huawei Faces Delays in EV Deliveries

By Caixin Global

  • Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. is facing trouble in meeting delivery commitments for the first electric vehicle (EV) it has co-developed with auto partner Chery Automobile Co. Ltd., a possible sign of supply chain challenges for the model.
  • Some people who placed orders for the Luxeed S7, which is the first electric sedan marketed under Huawei’s Smart Selection business model, recently complained online that they could not receive their cars within the promised timeframe.
  • In an effort to mollify the customers, Luxeed announced Monday on social media that it will provide people who placed orders for the Luxeed S7 between Nov. 28 and Jan. 15 with varying cash compensation capped at 10,000 yuan ($1,403), based on their wait time.

Two New Chinese Stocks

By Turtles all the way down

  • (I didn’t want to send it out right away, because I wanted to proofread my post before sending it, and unfortunately DADA is already up 10% since writing 🙁 )
  • Recently Dada Nexus (DADA) , a Chinese last mile delivery service and on demand retail platform reported that about 500mn RMB ($70mn US) of revenue and costs were overstated for the first 3 reported quarters of 2023.
  • This news came right after 2 JD executives had taken over management of the company in December last year.

Daily Brief India: HDFC Bank, NHPC, Tata Steel Ltd and more

By | Daily Briefs, India

In today’s briefing:

  • HDFC Bank: Growth Trajectory Remains Intact Despite Short-Term Headwinds
  • NHPC OFS – While the Overhang Remains, Momentum on the Stock Has Been Very Strong
  • Morning Views Asia: Tata Steel Thailand

HDFC Bank: Growth Trajectory Remains Intact Despite Short-Term Headwinds

By Ankit Agrawal, CFA

  • HDFC Bank’s (HDFCB) stock was down over -8% yesterday and is down over -3% today. The stock seems to have reacted to low deposit growth (~2% QoQ) in Q3FY24 .
  • Post the merger with HDFC Ltd that completed in Jun 2023, HDFCB needs to grow its deposits at a fast pace to support its loan growth.
  • We think HDFCB is well placed to do so. It also has an option to raise capital through affordable housing bonds which have good economics, similar to term deposits.

NHPC OFS – While the Overhang Remains, Momentum on the Stock Has Been Very Strong

By Clarence Chu

  • The GoI is looking to raise US$199m in trimming a portion of its stake in NHPC (NHPC IN). There is an upsize option to increase the deal size to US$279m.
  • Assuming that the deal upsizes, the deal here would be a relatively large one to digest at 11 days of the stock’s ADV.
  • The deal appears to be well flagged, with the selldown by the GoI appearing to be part of its divestment drive across PSUs in India.

Daily Brief Japan: Tokyo Kiraboshi Financial Group, Japan Exchange Group, Shift Inc and more

By | Daily Briefs, Japan

In today’s briefing:

  • Japanese Regional Banks – Three Key Positive Picks
  • Japan Governance | Will Reforms Unlock Valuations
  • Shift: Market Overreacts to Temporary Dip in Earnings

Japanese Regional Banks – Three Key Positive Picks

By Victor Galliano

  • We explore twelve Japanese regional banks to look for key beneficiaries of the improving interest rate outlook, along with valuations, credit quality and capital adequacy
  • The global interest rate outlook is in some flux, with the Fed’s and ECB’s prospects of near-term easing being tempered; this should support Japanese JGB yields and domestic bank valuations
  • We are positive on three banks that are big beneficiaries of rising domestic interest rates; top pick Tokyo Kiraboshi Financial, Gunma Bank and higher risk option Suruga Bank

Japan Governance | Will Reforms Unlock Valuations

By Mark Chadwick

  • Reforms Drive Improvement: Japan’s corporate reforms, catalyzed by governance codes and TSE pressure, are fostering capital efficiency, shareholder value, and long-term equity gains.
  • “Name and Shame” Initiative Impact: TSE’s disclosure initiative reveals 54% of Topix 500 companies enhancing capital efficiency, with early indications suggesting positive longer-term performance trends.
  • Future Alpha Opportunities: Expectation of increased disclosure in the coming months, particularly from proactive companies; potential for market surprises from obstructive firms trading below book value.

Shift: Market Overreacts to Temporary Dip in Earnings

By Shifara Samsudeen, ACMA, CGMA

  • Shift Inc (3697 JP) reported 1QFY08/2024 results last week. Revenue and OP increased 29.5% and 0.4% YoY to ¥25.1bn and ¥1.8bn respectively.
  • Both revenue and OP were below consensus estimates which triggered a more than 25% drop in Shift’s share price over the last 5 days.
  • We think the weaknesses in the company’s 1Q earnings were temporary and we expect the company’s earnings to show recovery going forward

Weiqiao Textile (2698 HK)’s Pre-Conditional Merger By Absorption

By David Blennerhassett

  • After shares were suspended on the 27 November, Weiqiao Textile Co (2698 HK) has now announced a pre-conditional privatisation at HK$3.50 per H-share.
  • This Offer, from its parent, is by way of a Merger by Absorption, which incorporates a Scheme-like vote. There is no tendering condition.
  • The Offer Price is a premium to last close is a hefty 104.68%. and around a six-year high. This is done.

Benefit One (2412): The Plot Thickens

By Travis Lundy

  • Today, the day before the previously extended M3 Inc (2413 JP) Partial Tender Offer for Benefit One Inc (2412 JP) was due to expire, M3 extended it another 20 days.
  • Dai Ichi Life Insurance (8750 JP) several days ago extended their expected start date by weeks – from mid-January to early February.
  • The wording in the new document from M3 is curious. It bears examination. As does the strategy positioning and choice of each of the participants.

KOSDAQ150 Index Rebalance Preview: Potential Adds Soaring; Short Sell Ban Not Helping

By Brian Freitas

Hang Seng Internet & IT Index Rebalance Preview: ZX Inc Could Replace Flowing Cloud

By Brian Freitas

TOPIX Jan FFW Change – Visional (4194), Anycolor (5032), Furuya Metal (7826)

By Travis Lundy

  • Late last week, the TSE announced the changes in FFW for companies which have FY-end in the calendar Q2. Changes at 30 Jan close also include Phased Weighting Changes.
  • There are two additions and 61 upweights (including net effect of PWR/PWIs). There are 456 down-weights with two-way flows of about US$1bn. There is a tiny funding trade.
  • Visional (4194 JP) and Furuya Metal (7826 JP) are the two adds. Other large dollar upweights are Asahi Intecc (7747 JP) and Anycolor (5032 JP)

44% of Korean Stocks Are Trading Below Book Value – FSC Wants to Improve This (Following Japan)

By Douglas Kim

  • FSC Chairman Kim Joo-hyun mentioned that too many companies in Korea are trading below book value and the FSC plans to implement changes to improve upon this issue.
  • According to Korea Exchange, 1,111 companies out of total listed in KOSPI and KOSDAQ in Korea (2,538) are trading at below 1x book value (PBR) (liquidation value).
  • According to the Capital Group, about 39% of companies in the TOPIX trade below book value, compared to just 5% for companies in the S&P 500 Index.

Aequitas 2024 Asia IPO Pipeline – US ADRs

By Sumeet Singh

  • In this note, we will look at the Asia Pacific IPO pipeline for 2024, following up with US ADRs, after having looked at HK, India, Japan and Korea earlier.
  • This list has been compiled on a best effort basis from tracking the company filings and through various other sources
  • The deals you see in this note are only a part of our full IPO pipeline tracker. Feel free to drop us a message for additional information on these IPOs.

Yamae Group Placement – Would Result in a Large Dilution, Although Its Momentum Has Been Strong

By Clarence Chu

  • Yamae Group Holdings (7130 JP) is looking to raise US$115m from a primary follow-on. As per the firm, proceeds will be used to pay down its acquisition-linked debt.
  • We would argue that the deal is somewhat well flagged given the firm’s track record of acquisitions, with the most recent being Confex Holdings.
  • That being said, the deal would result in a large dilution for the firm, and would be a large one to digest at 48 days of Yamae’s three month ADV.

Weiqiao Textile (2698 HK): Pre-Condition Satisfied as Prudence Edges Towards a Blocking Stake

By Arun George

  • Weiqiao Textile Co (2698 HK)’s offer pre-condition is satisfied. Prudence has increased its shareholding to 3.39% of the outstanding shares (9.79% of H Shares), marginally short of a blocking stake.
  • The HK$3.50 offer has been declared final, which rules out a bump. Therefore, Prudence’s strategy could be to play the gross spread or to block the deal.
  • The Shandong Luoxin Pharmaceutical (8058 HK) precedent supports the gross spread play view. However, unlike the precedent, Prudence is marginally short of a blocking stake in Weiqiao Textile.

By Janaghan Jeyakumar, CFA

  • In this insight, we take a look at the potential index changes for F100 and F250 in the run-up to the March 2024 index rebal event.
  • Although I do not see any regular ADDs/DELs for the March 2024 rebalance, there might be one or two intra-review changes during the first quarter of 2024.
  • These intra-review changes will be triggered by the completion of M&A events and it is important to know which names are leading the race to become intra-review ADDs.

  • Although the total amount of share cancellations of 6.1 trillion won in 2023 seems fairly large, this represented only 0.24% of total market caps of Korean companies.
  • We also provide a list of seven Korean companies that have been targeted by activist investors  to cancel more shares and improve corporate governance.

  • The stock is trading at just a quarter of the price Intel was willing to pay for it, indicating a lack of appreciation by the market.
  • The lack of coverage and silence during the Intel deal, as well as being an Israeli company, may deter some investors, but Tower has the potential for significant growth and ongoing capacity expansion projects, making it an attractive investment with the potential for a 3x return over the next three years.

Esker – Another record quarter for new business

By Edison Investment Research

Esker reported FY23 revenue growth of 12%, or 14% in constant currency (cc), at the lower end of its guidance range. New contract wins in Q423 were 38% higher cc than in the prior quarter and 58% higher cc y-o-y, reflecting strong demand in France and the rest of Europe. FY23 operating profitability will take a hit as sales commission for better-than-expected new business is recognised in Q423. As FY24 guidance is more conservative than we expected, we have reduced our FY24 forecasts, resulting in a normalised EPS cut of 7.6%. While current economic conditions are weighing on the volume of transactions processed by Esker’s platform, the strength of new contract wins provides good support for medium-term growth.
