Can Do to Double Stores in 5 Years – and Boost Profits Too

Aeon Group managed to maintain revenues at ¥8.6 trillion in FY2020, the third straight year with little change. Although it has no department store divison to drag it down, GMS operations and its heavy reliance on real estate and SCs, which make up more than 60% of revenues, meant it had a very difficult year in terms of profits – operating profit dropped 30%.
A new five-year plan suggests it will spend heavily on e-commerce, and even wants to earn more from retailing rather than just from renting space. This is what many analysts have been calling for but will take time.

The combination of the leading e-commerce retailer and the country’s top supermarket chain makes this one of the strongest contenders in the race for online food sales, particularly as Life is under the control of <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/mitsubishi-corp" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:20668:1" rel="noopener">Mitsubishi Corp (8058 JP)</a> – although <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/rakuten-inc" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:31:1" rel="noopener">Rakuten Inc (4755 JP)</a> and <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/z-holdings-corp" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:19603:1" rel="noopener">Z Holdings (4689 JP)</a> aren’t standing still.
Amazon is now expanding its tie-up with Life and plans to bring in Valor as a new partner later this year and is highly likely to add further partnerships going forward.

The share price went down to £2.71 per share in early trading before eventually ending the day at £2.87 per share.Deliveroo managed to narrow losses last year, however if Deliveroo is requested to treat its riders as employees, all that could be easily undone. Therefore, we expect shares to remain under pressure medium term with additional pressure from retail selling towards mid next week as shares bought via the Deliveroo app becomes tradable from 7th April.
